If your car has expired registration sitting in a driveway in East Nashville, Antioch, or out in Bellevue, you can still donate it. In Tennessee, lapsed or expired tags usually do not stop a car donation. What matters for TuneIn Rides and Heritage for the Blind is that you have a valid Tennessee title in your name. You do not need to re-register the vehicle, pay back registration fees, or make it roadworthy before donating. We’ll handle pickup and paperwork so you can clear the headache and support a real local-impact charity.
Here’s how it works in Nashville Metro: once you submit your donation, TuneIn Rides schedules a free tow from anywhere in the area — downtown, Madison, Donelson, Hermitage, Hendersonville, Smyrna, Franklin, and beyond. The vehicle does not need to run, and it doesn’t need current tags because it’s moved by tow truck, not driven. At pickup, you sign the title over; from that point, the car becomes the charity’s responsibility. You’ll get a tax receipt, and we’ll guide you on notifying the Tennessee Department of Revenue/DMV of the transfer so you’re not on the hook for future tickets or renewals.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
Confirm you have the Tennessee title in your name
Expired registration is usually fine; the key is a valid title. Find your Tennessee title and check that your name matches the current owner. If you’re in Davidson, Williamson, Rutherford, or Sumner County and can’t find it, let us know — we’ll explain how to request a replacement from the state before pickup.
Submit your donation with basic car and location details
Provide the year, make, model, approximate condition, and where the car is parked — maybe a condo lot in The Gulch, a driveway in Green Hills, or a shop in Madison. Note that the registration is expired. This doesn’t block your donation; it just helps us plan the tow and paperwork correctly.
Schedule your free tow anywhere in Nashville Metro
TuneIn Rides arranges a professional tow truck at no cost to you. The car does not have to start or be drivable, and it doesn’t need current tags. We can pick up from homes, street parking where legal, or repair shops across Nashville, from Sylvan Park to Hermitage to Murfreesboro.
Sign the title at pickup and hand over the keys
When the tow driver arrives, you’ll sign the Tennessee title over to Heritage for the Blind via TuneIn Rides. Registration status doesn’t change the title process. Once signed, responsibility for the vehicle shifts away from you. The tow driver will take the car, even with expired plates, and we’ll handle the rest.
Get your tax receipt and notify the state of transfer
After the vehicle is processed, you’ll receive a tax receipt you can use for a $500+ deduction, with larger amounts supported by IRS Form 1098-C. We’ll remind you to file a notice of transfer with the Tennessee Department of Revenue/DMV so future renewals, tickets, or tolls are no longer tied to your name.
Potential complications to watch for
Title not in your name or missing entirely
Tip: If the car is still in a previous owner’s name or you’ve lost the Tennessee title, we can’t complete the donation until that’s fixed. Contact your local county clerk office in Davidson or your home county for a duplicate or to update ownership. Reach out to us and we’ll walk you through what the state usually requires.
Outstanding loans or liens on the vehicle
Tip: If a bank or finance company still has a lien on the title, we typically can’t accept it until the lien is released. Check the front of your title for any listed lienholder. If there is one, call them for a lien release letter or payoff information before scheduling pickup so the transfer to the charity is clean and final.
Car is on public property or at risk of being towed
Tip: If your expired-tag vehicle is on the street downtown or in a shared lot where management is threatening to tow, let us know right away. Exact location and access matter. We’ll work to schedule pickup as quickly and safely as possible, but we may need permissions or a specific time window to avoid city or property tows.
Plates and insurance after donation
Tip: In Tennessee, you’re usually responsible for removing your license plate and canceling or updating your insurance. At pickup, take off the plate and keep it. Then notify your insurer and file the transfer notice with the state. This helps make sure you’re not billed for insurance or tagged for renewals afterward.
